COTABATO CITY (MindaNews/13 May) — Unidentified gunmen brazenly killed a school principal in broad daylight this morning, the first election-related violence reported in Cotabato City.
Senior Inspector Wales Kasuyo, chief of the Cotabato City Police Station One said Abdulrakman Mero, principal of Likain Elementary School in Bongo Island, was driving his white Volkswagen with plate number NEG 916 when two men on a motorcycle overtook the car and fired at the victim.
The killing was witnessed by scores of shocked bystanders along Bonifacio Street in downtown Cotabato City around 8:30 a.m. this morning.
“The gunmen overtook the car on its right side. They only fired once and the bullet struck the head killing the principal instantly,” Kasuyo told Mindanews.
Kasuyo said the gunmen have apparently trailed the principal for some time and opened fire when the car reached the busy portion of Bonifacio Street.
He said Mero had just arrived last night bringing the election returns for the municipal elections of Parang, Maguindanao.
Kasuyo said Mero’s killing is the first election related violence reported in the city.
