First district councilor Edgar "Kap" Ibuyan, who is also the president of the local Abap, said fellow Councilor Paolo Duterte financed the installation. Duterte sits as councilor in his capacity as president of the Association of Barangay Councils in the city
There are 27 boxers under the helm of Abap-Davao, Ibuyan said. The former chair of barangay Bankerohan said enabling the boxers to train at night is a "big thing" since some of them are now preparing for national competitions, including the 2008 Smart /PLDT National Youth Boxing Championships slated May 4-10 in Ilo-ilo City. He also announced that two Davao boxers, John Vincent and Engelbert Moralde, will see action in the Palarong Pambansa on April 20-26 in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. They won gold medals in the recent Kalilangan Festival Boxing championships in General Santos City.
Ibuyan was optimistic the Moralde brothers would do well in the Palarong Pambansa, a multi-sports event for elementary and high school students.
"They are now training hard and I am hopeful that they will perform well," he said. For the 2008 Smart /PLDT National Youth Boxing Championships, Abap-Davao will send some 20 boxers, who have been training hard for several weeks now. Last year, Abap-Davao took home two silver and 10 bronze medals in the event which was held in Misamis Oriental. (Rico Biliran/MindaNews)
