Jarloc, a standout from Holy Cross of Davao College, won the juniors plum while Batucan of Blue Knights Chess Club clinched the kiddies title. Jarloc scored 5 points in the five-round Swiss system event and tallied a better tie break over Jerwell Andoy of Jose Maria College and Arturo Ravelo III of Matina Chess Club who also both registered 5 points. Andoy and Ravelo placed second and third in the two-day tournament organized by City Sports Development Division under Christopher "Bong" Go. Surprisingly, Jose Maria College ace chesser Jay Bulicatin ended his campaign at fourth place with 4 points. On the other hand, Batucan outpoints Ademar Toleran Jr. of Sped-Bangkal and Aglipay Oberio of Holy Name Foundation who settled for second and third place honor. They all scored 5 points. Alvin Acas and Austin Jacob Lituratus, who both tallied 4 points, finished at fourth and fifth place. Cerlin Anabieza of University of Mindanao and Child of God Learning Center bet Ella Grace Moulic took the Best Female Performer Juniors and Kiddies category, respectively. Youngest participant was Eric Yngayo Jr., a 5-year-old woopdusher from Toril Chess Club, according to tournament coordinator Ronnie Tabuldong.
A total of 230 chessers across Davao City saw action in the tournament which was one of the several sporting events lined up for the Pahalipay ni RRD sports extravaganza. (Rico Biliran / MindaNews)
