Half of this house, which is among the five damaged in Bayug in Iligan City during Tropical Storm Basyang three weeks ago, apparently collapsed, swallowed by the Mandulog River as the raging current scoured the soft riverbank. This area, sometimes referred to as “Bayug Island” by Iliganons because it is a river delta, was severely damaged during Typhoon Sendong 14 years ago as logs and floodwaters came rushing down, killing several residents. The other side of the river, which is densely populated that also sustained severe damage during Sendong, has been protected by a flood control project and a river esplanade since a few years ago.
