Majority of the residents displaced by the Marawi Siege in 2017 (16,072 families or 80,360 persons, according to the Mindanao Displacement Bulletin of the UNHCR as of March 2024) have yet to return to their villages in ‘Ground Zero.’ They await the release of government compensation so they can rebuild or repair their houses. Many live in temporary shelters in Barangay Sagonsongan but the five-year lease has expired and while negotiations are ongoing to keep them there, the threat of eviction hounds residents.
