Easterlies to affect eastern Mindanao

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said easterlies would bring rains to eastern Mindanao and other parts of the island.

Pagasa said scattered rain showers and thunderstorms would affect the provinces of Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, South Cotabato, Sarangani, and Sultan Kudarat.

The state weather bureau said the easterlies will also bring scattered rain showers over the Caraga region and could result in flash floods or landslides.

Phivolcs warns of possible tsunamis in Mindanao due to Indonesia quakes

Earthquakes in neighboring Indonesia might trigger huge tsunamis that could reach the southern parts of Mindanao, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) warned early this week.

PHIVOLCS director Teresito Bacolcol said there are active trenches in Indonesia that could trigger major earthquakes that can generate tsunamis in the Celebes Sea.

Bacolcol said a magnitude 5.7 earthquake was recorded 202 kilometers southeast of Balut Island in Sarangani, Davao Occidental last Thursday but did not generate a tsunami.

Shabu worth P272,000 seized in Marawi City

An alleged pusher was arrested and P272,000 worth of shabu was confiscated in an anti-drug operation by the police in Marawi City last Monday.

BGen Prexy Tanggawohn, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police regional director said the suspect identified only as “Kar,” 47, a resident of Kalungunan village in Pantar town, Lanao del Norte was arrested when he allegedly sold the shabu to an undercover police officer.

Tanggawohn said the suspect was caught with 40 grams of shabu in two transparent plastic sachets and a bundle of 48 pieces of boodle money used by the police in the sting operation. (Froilan Gallardo/MindaNews)
