Benjamin Tumaliuan, environment regional executive director, reported that since January, some 1000 cubic meters of illegally-cut logs have been seized by DENR personnel mostly coming from Agusan del Sur and Agusan del Norte.
He also warned mini-sawmill operators they would not hesitate to order closure if they’re found hiding undocumented logs. He said he would conduct surprise visit to some 40 mini-sawmills here
Sources said that fly-by-night band saws were milling illegally-cut high quality lauan during night time in Butuan. Tumaliuan told reporters that the move was in response to the failure of DENR’s field officers to curb illegal logging in two Agusan provinces. The suspension order which took effect two weeks ago also prohibits towing of logs and other forest products along the Agusan River.
Tumaliuan, however, assured the public to lift the suspension order if the provincial environment offices would come up with measures to stop illegal logging activities. (MindaNews)
