Chief Insp. Wilfredo Perocho, Magpet police chief, identified him as Ronnie “Ming” Bacag, a CAFGU member assigned in Barangay Basak, one of the remotest villages in Magpet.
Perocho said that Bacag and his group were conducting patrol operations in the Magpet hinterlands when they chanced upon 20 members of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) led by a certain Command Kabug of Front 53.
Bacag and his group served as blocking force while members of the Bravo Company of the Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion were conducting surveillance operations in the area.
The town was celebrating its 37th founding anniversary last Sunday when the fighting took place. But Perocho said the celebration “was generally peaceful, and that the encounter should not cause the residents any alarm.” (Malu Cadeliña Manar / MindaNews)
