MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews/28 Jan) – A keen eye could not possibly miss the subdued tone of foreign media reports on the death Sunday of Indonesian dictator Suharto. His role in the bloodletting that killed between 500,000 and 1 million members and supporters of the Indonesian Communist Party was played down, along with the massive corruption and human rights abuses that attended his 32-year rule. What has been emphasized is the economic progress the country achieved under his regime, although billions in state funds also enriched close relatives and high-ranking military officials, the latter profiting much from logging that to this day continues to ravage the archipelago’s rich rainforests.
